John Kerry

If John Kerry is confident that he can win in November, why doesn't he resign from the Senate? I'd really like a job making $154,700+ a year where I don't have to show up. Nice... Your tax dollars hard at work.

Memorial Day

What a great holiday to have to remember all the people that have fought and died for our great country, the United States of America.
If you can read this, thank a teacher.

Spring Fever?

Spring Fever?

One of the definitions of spring is: To move out of place; come loose, as parts of a mechanism.

That seems about right..the days are getting longer, it's getting warmer and greener (and buggier), and I seem to have the Reverse Seasonal Affective Disorder.

General listlessness, lack of motivation, a little depression, enough to be nudged enough off center to notice.

The real kicker is that it seems unusually difficult to come up with a satisfactory answer as to why.

Broken Record

Why are people so stupid? Uggh!

A few questions for Mr. Kerry

A few questions for Mr. Kerry

You say the rich do not pay enough taxes. In 1979 the top 1 percent of earners paid 19.75 percent of income taxes. Today they pay 36.3 percent. How much is enough?

In January 1991, after Iraq extinguished Kuwait's sovereignty, you opposed responding with force rather than economic sanctions. Have such sanctions ever undone such aggression?

On Jan. 22, 1991, responding to a constituent opposed to the Gulf War, you wrote "I share your concerns" and would have given sanctions more time. Nine days later, responding to a voter who favored the war, you wrote, "I have strongly and unequivocally supported President Bush's response to the crisis." Did you have a third position?

You oppose immediate termination of U.S. involvement in Iraq, and you opposed the $87 billion to pay for involvement. Come again?

In 1994, the year after the first attack on the World Trade Center, you voted to cut $1 billion from counterterrorism activities. In 1995 you proposed a $1.5 billion cut in intelligence funding. Are you now glad that both proposals were defeated?

You favor civil unions but not same-sex marriage. What is the difference?

Praising McCain-Feingold restrictions on political contributions, you said: "This bill reduces the power of the checkbook and I will therefore support it." In December you saved your sagging campaign by writing it a $6.4 million check. Why is your checkbook's unfettered freedom wholesome?

First, Pedro - 2004 Salary $17,000,000.00. Man.. how can he survive?

Second, the average salary for a professional baseball player has dropped to only $2.49 million. This is terrible, how will they be able to support their families, afford their expensive cars and homes and at the same time pay for all those steroids? Something is going to have to go. I suppose we can expect to see a lot of divorces as ballplayers dump their families.

Of course, the real suckers are those who pay to go to the games or even watch them on TV. Why take the time to watch spoiled millionaires play a sport they constantly complain about. Better to spend your time watching kids play real games on sand lots than having to take out a bank loan so you can afford to take a boy to the ball park. I wonder if the major leagues would consider outsourcing the player positions to India to reduce costs?

Cutting Edge?

If you or your business thinks you're on the cutting edge of anything, think again. "Cutting edge" is such a hackneyed term that it barely gets you off the bottom of the box, much less out of it. "Cutting edge" doesn't connote sharpness or edginess or anything remotely knife-like anymore - it's one of those metaphors that's gotten dull and needs to be replaced before someone gets hurt.

It isn't only "cutting edge" that's misused. Our best English-language descriptions are cheapened through overblown over-use.
Fantastic. Awesome. Humungous. Words like these have lost their impact through being adopted by the illiterati as "long" or "difficult" words with which to impress.
And when the words get boring, you can try fantastically awesome. Or awesomely fantastic.
Like, WOW, man.
It's not the words, stupid. It's how you use them. Sparingly, appropriately. And for effect.

There I said... I feel better now. On a positive note, I think I've finally mastered greater than and less than.
